You be the Judge
Chime in without having to fill out an entire comment.
click the + or - icon to reflect your opinion of a post.
we can choose to have the posts with the most points “float to the top” and those with the least drop to the floor. think of it as self-moderation.
what do you think of this feature? is it good? is it bad?
do you really want to know what everyone thinks of your posts?
Moderation!
Next step: make moderation points scarce and infrequent. That keeps the wankers from controlling the discussion and they can get modded down like they deserve to be.
Justice is brought to tic.com LOL
I believe in God because every once in a while, I hear a voice that says, “You’re my favorite.”
if points are scarce
what would earn you points?
posting? commenting?
i could just give out points to those i deemed “worthy”
or here’s a good one: you could pay for points!
would random comments to everyones posts earn you points? seems wankers would tend to do things like that.
I am NOT a wanker… :-D
I am NOT a wanker… :-D
I like giving points to users based on # of posts/replies. If someone truly IS being a wanker then you can just take away their points… you know like if someone posts a poll about name tags or something.
Oh yeah, a user shouldn’t be able to + his own post.
point nazi
No points for you! 1 year!
Love it!
Great job Jeff! I think this is a welcome addition to the site. We will see how it all turns out, but I think a self moderated system reflects what we are shooting for even more. I dig it! ;-)
slashdot
At slashdot, moderation points are handed out as a function of recent and ongoing participation on their site. Moderation points are limited, half a short shelf life (i.e. you can’t hoard them — think of them as virtual manna) and you only get to moderate periodically.
This keeps morons, lurkers and power mongers from dominating the content because it distributes moderation across a wider user base. The content written by morons gets modded down and they can’t mod their own stuff up, the lurkers who only read and dont contribute don’t get to moderate and the power mongers can’t dominate content by posting the same ideas over and over.
So, what would happen to a tic.com user who contributes regularly is that they would log in and receive a notice that says, “Congrats, today you have 20 moderation points. They expire in three days.” The person would then be able to give thumbs up or thumbs down on up to 20 posts. Once the points or the available days expire, the person loses moderation rights. If they continue to participate on the site, they will get moderation points again at an unannounced time.
I recognize this system involves a lot of coding so it may be unrealistic. At the least, can we make sure ppl can’t mod their own posts?

Interesting
Points are already limited, in that one can’t repeatedly +++ (or —-) an entry.
Suggestions:
The +/- control and the “0 points” total are separated by the length of the entry. I wonder if they could be brought closer together.
If I + something, I currently have no way of retracting it except to change it to a -. What if I could hit my highlighted + to remove it and go back to a neutral position?

neutral position
i didn’t do it exactly the way you suggested but you can now cancel your vote by clicking the opposite icon. its not the fastest thing in the world so be patient.
It works!
(Once I reloaded the page.) Thanks!

Did you all not get your
Did you all not get your quota of gold stars as a child?
i like the idea but...
im not sure about the “posts” moving around on the page based on people’s opinion. yes i think this can be a great moderation tool and also a way to encourage others to read something awesome by another poster. however looking at some of our longer discussions (ie the debate on homosexuality) if “popular” posts are at the top it will be hard to see the evolution of the discussion- some posts won’t make sense etc etc because they aren’t in their original context

good point
maybe it becomes a matter of semantics but by post i was referring to the forum topics as opposed to the comments made to them. and this would also be an additional view instead of replacing the current view.
but what do you think about deleting posts and comments that are below a specific threshold? if half (or 2/3rds even) of the people on this site decided to push ‘-’ is the comment worth keeping around? (an alternative could be requiring a click to see it)
here’s another question:
can the “value” of a post be measured by the point sum of the comments?
what would be more interesting to read, a post that got 50 votes and 48 points or a post that got 50 votes and 2 points?
Delete people's comments?
If you start deleting people’s comments, then basically you are saying that what they had to say wasn’t worth keeping. Hmm…seems that would defeat the purpose of this—a place where people can comment freely. I don’t know about the whole + or - thing being a measuring device. Basically, we are rating how “worthy” someone’s comments are. And how do you monitor the points…I may not agree with someone’s post (view) so do I give it a “-” just because I don’t agree even though it is a good voiced point. I think the points can be manipulated and we are guiding people to posts that we think are important rather than letting them decide for themselves what is quality or not.
: )
Looks familiar! : )
I love the idea of being able to react to someone’s post with “+” or “-” and having that push their post DOWN or even deleted (with enough “-” votes).
I see it used sparingly when a comment is way crazy.
I’ve noticed that without it, people self police (which is good) but it has that “talk radio” flavor and sort of hijacks the conversation.
“Down with highjacking!” Use the “+” and “-“
That being said, people have been really awesome and patient with each others’ view points…
voting success
After all look how succesful having a poll about name tags was!!!
