Spiritual Life Survey
We continue to be hungry for additional input - especially after the Un-Conference. REVEAL is unique opportunity offered to only a select group of churches. This process offers an in-depth look at what causes spiritual growth in people. There is no method of tracking people’s responses, so your individual answers are completely confidential. The survey link will be open ONLY until November 25th. Results will be tabulated by REVEAL and shared with the Journey.
We hope these questions help you, and help our church to excel in fostering spiritual growth.
The survey takes about 20 minutes - the link is below. After you have completed the survey you are welcome to post your personal thoughts.
the problems with multiple choice
many times where i am or what i think isn’t an option EX:
“Which of the following best describes where you are in your spiritual life? (Select one)
I was raised christian, baptised and grew up doing the whole thing- and i honestly believed it all- i wasn’t a false convert. but now i think differently, im not number 1, i have been exploring spiritually for a while now, but the rest don’t really apply either-
i also couldn’t believe how much “christian” music and tv was apparently so good for growth (it was all over the survey). what if someone thinks that alot of christian music isn’t that good and prefers the dixie chicks, akon or fall out boy

No way around it
Rebecca,
The survey is limited in mulitiple choice options and even the “assumed” knowledge of the people taking the survey.. .and even the terms… but we are eager to get the results which will help us start the best discussions. This can only serve as a tool to get us started…and I appreciate you taking the time to give your input.
i totally agree
when doing a survey like this- and covering so many people, its hard to include every possible person in every question. its not really their fault- because they are doing their best

"growth"
hey becky, i agree with you comment about music. when i took the survey, i had similar thoughts: “you have got to be kidding me; most CCM only helps me grow spiritually by forcing me to pray the song will end.” the cool thing about the survey is that the results in other churches have been really surprising. it’s like churches have assumed that they’ve got spiritual growth down pat & have had to face the fact that the obvious things aren’t always helpful.
not the best survey
I thought the survey was pretty weak… and long too… I got halfway done and then just started clicking down the middle just to get done… but it’s an attempt to quantify something that is nearly impossible to measure anyway. The results should be interesting if the results of something similar at Willow Creek are any indication.
survey
How do you get to the survey. Whenever I click the survey button, it leads me to this blog, which obviously isn’t the survey. Is this survey keeping track of who took it? Maybe because Jim took it, I can’t because we use the same computer. Or maybe there is something else wrong. Anyway, are you able to track who answered what?
big brother
The level of information they would have about you would be equal to any other website. Things they would know are: what website you came from, what kind of computer you have (browser, OS, etc), your IP address (who your ISP is), [im prolly missing something else] they also will most likely give you a cookie. the cookie will identify you as an individual to them and tie that to the information listed above. this is most likely the reason that you aren’t able to take the test from the same computer twice.
There is no information about your talkinchurch login sent to them. Also talkinchurch.com cannot tell if you click the survey link.
It is interesting to note that if you click the link in JeffW’s email (or any link in the emails JeffW sends from Constant Contact) the fact that you (the email address that received that specific email) clicked that link is recorded by Constant Contact. I’m not sure what level of detail Constant Contact keeps or reveals it its users but it would be hypothetically possible to have a list of email addresses that clicked the survey link.
These two entities (Constant Contact and REVEAL) are separate companies and as such it is not possible for either one of them to match people to survey results. They could connect the dots if they worked together, but that is an unlikely event.

Serving
I think it is interesting that so many of the questions revolved around serving. It is like they held Martha view of Christianity higher than a Mary. That if people do more, they will grow in faith. I know personally that the amount of time serving does not have much correlation to my spiritual growth and closeness to God. I can serve for the wrong reasons, serve where I’m not supposed to or am not gifted, or serve so much I have no time for God. I believe that service to a church can actually hinder a person’s faith. Burned out, sinning pastors are an example. Of course not serving and having too much of a inward focus can also hinder one’s growth. There must be another way to evaluate and encourage people’s spirituality.
hard to be honest
This survey was hard for me to take because I caught myself selecting how I wanted to be, not who I am. It was a good opportunity to help me reflect about what I can do about the areas I am dissatisfied in my spiritual growth.
some good questions
about WHAT is most important that a church provides… and how is the Journey doing in providing that.
I’m so curious to see the results - especially knowing how varied the opinions are of people who come to The Journey is WHAT they want (or need) (or think they need) from the church.
