Glorifying God and contributing to the Journey through our art
This is from one of the discussion groups at the unconference. People had ideas for using photography, pottery, sculpting, welding, music, painting and others. I’d like to start a conversation on how we can make this happen because it really struck me as an area where I can makes contributions and grow spiritually but I don’t quite now how to get started. What has to happen to get this going? Who are the people in charge of what happens on stage? Do we need and can we get an area on this website that is an “artist’s corner,” if you will, where we can upload mp3s, photos, poetry that the planning people can use as “stock” to choose from in planning services? How can we coordinate the photo walks we discussed? What can we do to ensure that we best compliment the themes of the worship experiences? And so many more questions that they’re not even worth listing this early in the game. Feedback? Moman? Garbers? Where you at?

My notes
(Leah, would you add an “unconference” tag to this topic so it’s easier to find in searches?)
Desires
Art-worship: Won’t this be a distraction for those with ADD? But you can flip that around and say, won’t this give ADD folk something to do? With all the different learning modes we have, why do we concentrate on singing, and listening to someone talk? Some people need to express themselves in order to process what’s going on.
Freak Street Carnival: Not just a venue for the Journey, but open to artists from the broader community. Create a venue for people who never get a showcase: teachers, high schoolers, seniors, freaks.
Random ideas
Next steps
Songwriters
I’d like to connect with other songwriters. Not everything is about corporate worship (most of my songs aren’t!) — but I’d like to see if we can’t get worship songs that are uniquely “Journey” and that ignite the Revolution.
Tag
Hey Jon,
I think I did tag it. Is it not showing up on search? Under random ideas, don’t forget photo walk!

Re: Tag
Oh I see, the tags are no longer visible. Hmm.
How about Sunday?
The topic / discussion / experience this Sunday is around “How Do I Connect With God?”
Is there a poem or song or __________ that we could offer as part of our “worship through art?”
Just thinking… love to have a few ideas pass this site…and then resonate with how EPIC is crafting together the Sunday experience….
Tags
good catch jon, you can now find the tags next to the posters name.
and if you’re looking for something specific checkout the search menu up top. You can enter a search term or click on one a popular tag. the larger the text the more things that are tagged with that term.
We should post some art
We should post some art dealing with each themes topic every week. I used to be in a band and we would interact with a website called song fight. They would post a topic and you would have a week to two weeks to come up with a song and then listeners could vote on their favorite. We could do kind of the same thing where we could post themes and then everybody could share their art dealing with that theme. It might be too much every week but start with a once a month online exhibition.
Great idea
I love Steve-O’s idea of posting art/music. Granted, I don’t have the ability to do this unless you want stick men (and even those my students laugh at). Would be great to see what comes out.
Most people liked it when we had the man (sorry, don’t remember who it was) painted that picture of Jesus during the experience. It would be cool to try something like that again.
That's a great idea! I
That’s a great idea! I haven’t looked into how to upload files here, so that might take some extra work, but it sounds like a great place to start.

yes!
An artist corner! and yes photo walk! and yes…. i forget what else. well i don’t have much time I have to go to bed! but i’ll comment more later.
-moman (well, for a little while longer anyway!)
drop the prejudice!
OK, so we have a “look” here at the journey, but we also have somewhat of a reputation for open mindedness…so why the across the board comments about such things as Thomas Kindad? I am not suggesting we invite him here for a showing, not even suggesting we use that style of paintings (that beautifully reflect God’s beauty), but I do think we should drop the reverse prejudice in the spirit of open mindedness. Until we do you can not expect to have a truly open forum for artist, since they will be concerned with condemnation.
Kinkade
Haha, yes, it is easy to cut down a particular artist and Thomas Kinkade is an easy target. I don’t particulary appreciate some of his stuff because it reminds me of grandma art and one painting is so similar to the other, but many people do like it. In fact, my whole attitude of his art changed when I heard Jim tell the story of when he went to this guy’s cube who was a Hindu from India. The guy had a Thomas Kinkade calendar and Jim asked him about it. Turns out the guy thought it was beautiful and it made him feel good. Anything that brings the peace of God to someone is good to me. If his art is somehow spreading the love and peace of God, I say go for it.
yeah
Amen, and again, I am not saying use it… just don’t put down entire catagories. Wonder what most people’s first responce to using the doxology in a service would be…talk about stuffy old church! Yet, it was beautifully included just a few weeks ago.
Being open to both sides
So i agree about being open, but i can still strongly dislike something. Thats the fun of art its all in the eye of the beholder. But part of art is the argumentaion between what you see and dont see in a work. I’d still like to see this an open forum with expression from both sides. Personally i think kinkade sucks. But it doesnt stop him from making more money than me. And if you see god in it great, again it’s what you see in it.
Kinkade
I am glad that he makes a ton of money (I hope he makes even more) and all kinds of people from different cultures like his work… it is just not my style though.
Oh come on, who doesn't
Oh come on, who doesn’t love a dimly lit cottage at dusk!?

Get off Kinkade
We’re getting distracted.
Artists, you are released! Connect! Create! Express!

Sunday: a start
Leah, way to go bringing your MacBook with your photos! Does anyone have a spare projector? I would like to see you and others do some “guerilla projection” and just commandeer a random wall, projecting whatever you want to.
Jaclyn, thank you for bringing your supplies! I hope we can establish art-worship as an accepted, even expected, form of worship. I know Sunday’s setup was haphazard. How can we make it more visible and inviting? And you shouldn’t have to bring your own supplies — what could The Journey own and provide?
