Communion - UnConference Topic

in

At the UnConference, our group discussed the desire to have Communion as a regular and meaningful part of our Journey Family Experience.

Although the rational for not including Communion as a regular part of the Sunday Experience seems to be based upon not wanting to have our newer attendees feel “uncomfortable,” we share the common feeling that 1) if people are attending as Seekers they are seeking a spiritual experience, which Communion is an escential part of, and 2) the absense of Communion as part of our regular Experience is most likely keeping some Believers from attending on a regular basis. Communion is the most spiritual meaningful activity that we can partake of as a group together - rather than feeling like this is intimidating to newcomers, our discussion centered around the fact that Seekers and Believers alike are attracted to Communion - from curiousity to passionate involvement.

We suggested a few approaches to incorporating Communion into the worship Experience.

First of all, have Communion as an available element at every Worship Experience - it can be off to the side so as not to be intimidating or a pressure, but at least available for those that would like to partake. It would be great if Communion could be highlighted fairly regularly in the Experience -either 1/month or at least once during each Series. At this time the meaning of Communion and relevant scriptures could be shared. Perhaps have a description of Communion at the Communion “station” so those that are not so familiar with it can be comfortable with the meaning and significance of communion?

In addition to having Communion comfortably available during each Experience, we agreed that there is a desire to be able to share in Communion from time to time as a community of believers - perhaps in a “Deeper” type of community communion service.

The root desire is to keep Communion not as a ritualistic act, but as an integral part of our Worship Experience.

It would be great to hear others’ thoughts on this topic!

interesting thoughts

Just curious, did you discuss:

  • integrating communion outside the worship experience at your LTG or small group?
  • integrating communion at the Journey office on a regular basis outside the regular worship experiences on sunday?

In my opinion, there is no doubt that communion is a sacrament we need to honor as a church. The question is really how to that best.

Communion

We did discuss Communion outside of the Sunday Experience in the context of something like a Deeper or other group worship experience.

We didn’t discuss LTG’s, but that’s a great idea!
