Missional Training Events

Alan Hirsch and Michael Frost are co-authors of the book The Shaping of Things to Come (Innovation and Mission for the 21st-Century Church).

Their basic thrust: Church as we know it was built on social structures that no longer exist. We need to become missionaries to our own culture. Let’s change from being attractional (bringing “them” into our church culture) to being missional (we go out, helping “them” form faith communities unique to their culture).

They are Aussies, so by definition they are not your average American Christians! It is a privilege to have each of them on our own turf, on two separate days:

Friday, September 21st: Alan Hirsch
10:00 a.m. — 4:00 p.m.
$25, lunch included

Wednesday, October 3rd: Michael Frost
9:00 a.m. — 3:00 p.m.
$50, plus lunch money

Both events will be at Church of the Chimes. The first one is hosted by the RCA (the denomination to which The Journey belongs), the second is hosted by little old me. Consequently, the second is more expensive because, hey, I don’t have a big organization with a budget and all! So please, don’t leave me in the lurch — if rethinking the way we do church for the sake of the world is important to you, come to both events.

Missional

Wow my heart jumps with the though of reaching people where they are, Loving and accepting them where they are, Giving them respect ( ouch ) even in their ( sin ) ? What is a better word for that. Just praying that we will love all the people God loves. We need things that will streach us out of our comforts areas and Love more. Thanks

count me in

sounds cool… wish I could make it but can’t.

One more option

This one from ReIMAGINE, a missional community in San Francisco:

We are inviting you to join us for an event we are calling “Entering The Story” on September 22, 2007. This will be the second time we’ve done this event—which many people found helpful and life changing the first time around. Entering the Story is designed to help participants enrich their understanding and engagement with what Jesus described as “The Kingdom of God.” The day will be divided into four sessions based on the four statements of Jesus found in Mark 1:15. Rather than being a presentation or lecture, we’ve designed the sessions to be participatory, conversational and maybe even a bit liturgical. Facilitators will guide the group through relevant scripture and midrash style discussion of practical life implications. Sessions will take place in real life settings in the Mission District and will incorporate artistic and aesthetic elements. In each session we will invite participants to explore and affirm various aspects of entering the story of God’s kingdom:

  1. WE EMBRACE OUR LIVES AND OUR TIMES AS A GIFT AND SACRED TRUST
  2. WE ORIENT OUR LIVES TOWARDS THE RESTORATION OF CREATION
  3. WE SURRENDER OUR LIVES TO IMAGINE A NEW WAY OF LIFE.
  4. WE ACT WITH INTENTION TO PURSUE LIFE UNDER THE RULE AND REIGN OF GOD

We believe that ENTERING THE STORY may be helpful to you if you are:

Curious about the essential message of Jesus.
Searching for inspiration and first steps for living in “the ways of the kingdom.”
Exploring being involved with ReIMAGINE and the community of SEVEN.

We also think that this day-long experience could be helpful to leaders who want to connect with others about how to help their communities embrace the reality of God’s kingdom OR for small groups who are searching for a scriptural and theological rationale for intentional communal formation practices.

We hope you will join us for ENTERING THE STORY.

Mike Frost this Wednesday!

We’ve added group pricing to this week’s event, to try to spark conversation and action that will continue beyond the event. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from an expert in missional churches. So come on, y’all!

I'll be there Wednesday

Hey Jon,
I’m very interested in hearing the practical ideas Mike Frost will bring.

I’m there.

Frosty topics

This is what I’ve asked Michael to talk about:

  • An intro to missional orientation for those who weren’t at Alan’s event.
  • OK, so we heard Alan, we know things have to change. So what do we do?
  • You’re a great storyteller. Besides success stories, do you have any good failure stories? Those can be encouraging in their own way, as ultimately we are all muddling around and few things go well the first time.
  • I shake my head, but I have to tell you, one pastor asked Alan, “You talk about these people who reject church. Where are they?”
  • What do we need to unlearn about evangelism?
  • There will still be a strong tendency among those who come to think, “OK, so I engage people in spiritual dialog, in order to get them to come to our church.”
  • Dialog is just part of the picture, but we fixate on it. What can we do to help guide people in their spiritual formation besides talk?
  • Get people thinking about missional experiments they can do. Give some coaching there.

Michael’s response: “I can do that kinda thing.”

Event CANCELED

Argh. Michael had huge flight delays getting out of Sydney. The event is canceled.

I’m not one to see demons under every rock. But with the amazing ups-and-downs I’ve had, I have to wonder if this is spiritual opposition.

demons under the rock

what satan meant for evil…

or can this be turned to good…maybe the timing was off (and i don’t mean the flight). could this be something the journey needs to get behind. maybe sponsoring it.
