Spiritual Growth for Beginners - Unconference Discussion

in

“I feel like there’s this puzzle and I can’t quite put all the pieces together.”
“It’s difficult for me to ask questions about the Bible or Christianity—is there a safe place at The Journey for me to explore my faith?”

These comments were expressed in our discussion group today, which was lead by Lee Williamson. Briefly, here’s what came out of our discussion:

• Reading the Bible on your own is daunting. We need a class on how to read and understand the Bible.
• Let’s have a Christianity 101 class that’s open to people who are questioning or doubting.
• Any group/class needs a knowledgeable leader and a relaxed atmosphere.
• How often should we meet? Once a week? Once a month?
• Some people would like mentors that you can talk to about your questions and help guide you.
• Groups could have people who are similar in age or have something in common.
• What topics are people interested in discussing?
• What days/times are best for people? Most agreed evenings during the week or after church on Sundays.

Great insights

Our group had some great insights into how it feel sto be new to the whole faith thing… the puzzle comment was an insightful analogy… and one person said they didn’t know where to start.
It seemed the need for this to be “relationally” strong was as important as being content strong.

Common Topic

I only sat in on this group briefly but what I heard was the same thing I had heard in a couple of discussions that I had with others. The same questions…Where to start? And where to do this in a “safe” environment. In another post the class “Bible for Dummies” was mentioned. We have done this class in the past…it has given basic Bible knowledge. What I hear is that this needs to be expanded even more and it needs to be in a more organic, on going way…not just a one time class. I think there are several avenues that can be traveled down…basic Bible reading, specific topics, discussions. I appreciate the input given above and those in other forums. Continue to post “what you need to help with the puzzle” because none of us have our puzzle all put together.
