Moving with God at 230 mph
I love things with motors that are quick and that you can ride, drive, fly, race or be towed behind. Sometimes I can spend a fair percentage of my “free time” in this area. However, my spiritual voice questions how constructive this time is, and whether any time at all should be spent doing “hobby” or sport type activities such as these when there is so much need in the world.
There are many people that spend most of their Earthly lives serving others.
Where is the line drawn as to what is too much or not enough?
how much is too much?
I wonder that sometimes after playing my 4th hour straight of XBox…
on hobbies
the point of faith isn’t to have a list of boxes to check off and spend your “off” time having fun. we lose the whole point of jesus fulfilling the law if we make faith about doing the right things. the faith journey is one of stretching and growing, but it’s also intensely satisfying. i love the journey because we’re not big on how things are “supposed” to look and i don’t think there is only one way that faith is supposed to look.
i used to think that serving/walking with god could only be comprised of “christian” activities. i dreaded the day when serving jesus would mean i’d have to move to africa and be a missionary. i did a bible study in which the author pointed out that god created us with our interests, passions, and desires and that they could be used for his glory. my love of pop culture has led to many spiritual conversations, so i don’t feel bad anymore about “wasting” time going to movies, etc. (within reason).
i don’t know if that makes any sense, but i guess i mean living a life that is true to who god created you to be (rather than one of forced piety) glorifies god more.

God is fun
Hey, God is fun to be with, likes to have fun with his kids, and likes to see us have fun. We get too uptight trying to work, work, work all the time. Motivation by guilt never works in the long run. Motivation by love does. I like to enjoy the wind on my face and doing nothing some of the time. In fact, those times have brought me closer to God lately than anything else. There is so much beauty, love, joy, and humor in what God has created. Wow! Thanks, God!
Having fun
Did you ever ask yourself, ‘Why did God create me?’ God can create anything. Planets, trees, rocks, waterfalls, the oceans, and beautiful sunsets. So what’s so special about me? God can create angels who spend their whole existence in obedience to Him and in worship of Him. So why me?
The one thing God cannot create, is a person who chooses to love Him. Someone He can love back and have a loving relationship with. When you love God and include Him in your everyday life, God can share that human experience with you. So when you are flying across that glassy lake some morning in your boat and you feel that natural high, remember that God is having fun vicariously through you. He cannot experience that feeling unless you want Him to. When I was building one of the sets for an Easter Musical, I had a very distinct feeling that Jesus was right there alongside me like an exuberant child with his tool belt on helping me to raise the heavy wooden frames. I have to admit, it seemed pretty silly at the time, but why not? Wouldn’t Jesus be excited and thrilled about the musical and all the people that would come, and maybe for the first time hear His story? As a carpenter, wouldn’t He want to be right there in time midst of the set construction?
So next time you are having fun doing something God would enjoy, go for it 100%
Remember, God is getting a thrill out of it too. If you didn’t do things to have fun, to get the adrenaline pumping, or just relax and enjoy God’s beautiful creation, etc., you’d be cheating God out of the experience.
Conversely, when you spend your whole life in duty and drudgery, what fun is that? If you do good works out of obligation, but are unhappy, how does that honor God and the effort He has invested in creating you? Would He enjoy living with you that way?
If there is any advice
MBFAM,
One thing I learned as a kid as I watched my father own and race 3 different Super Modifieds aka “hardtops” to AA fuel altered dragster as well as a top fuel funny car, this would be the difference between motors and engines. I’m sure you already know that motors are electrical and the engine is comustable.
Now go blow something up, prefferably a big block chevy. And if you want to do it cheeper a small block 400 will do just fine.
Peace out,
YBFAM,
